The
firm had its beginnings in November 1929 when Ben Matz,
a newly qualified .attorney from Simon's Town and John Pincus
joined forces and commenced trading under the name Pincus
& Matz from Standard Bank Chambers, Main Road, Wynberg.
In 1935 they moved to the Duncan Taylor's Building on the
comer of Maynard and Main Roads and in 1944 admitted JL
Feinberg as a partner and changed their name to Pincus Matz
& Feinberg. In 1954 they opened a second office in the
Permanent Building, Main Road, Claremont at the request
of the then Permanent Building Society.
The next significant change was in 1986 when Pincus Matz
& Feinberg and Marquard & Hugo-Hamman amalgamated
to form Pincus Matz - Marquard Hugo-Hamman and this was
reduced to the current name of Pincus Matz & Marquard
in 1997.
When Maynard House was built in Maynard Road, Pincus Matz
& Feinberg became the first and anchor tenant occupying
the bulk of the first floor. By 1985 they had spread far
down the passage and, at one stage, occupied the entire
first floor as well as aground floor shop which was concerted
into a Permanent Building Society agency, debt collecting
department and reception area. |
Changed circumstances however required changes in the firm
and in 1998 this was achieved physically by a move to the
newly built complex in Brodie Road, Wynberg.
The firm was essentially re-launched with a new crop of
youthful lawyers trading from Pincus Matz House. The current
partnership boasts an average age of forty four years and
a healthy mixture of experience and youthful energy. With
six attorneys on the staff the firm is big enough to handle
most problems and, at the same time, small enough to deliver
a personalised and caring service.
It numbers amongst its clients listed companies at the
one end of the spectrum to "the man in the street"
at the other and family businesses who have dealt with the
firm since its inception in 1929 to new clients coming through
the doors each day.
